Rekha Gupta: A Life Rooted in Service

Rekha Gupta is currently serving as the 9th Chief Minister of Delhi, the capital of the country. Her tenure marks a historic moment, as it signifies the Bharatiya Janata Party’s return to power in the national capital after nearly three decades. Her elevation to this position represents the culmination of more than three decades of unwavering commitment to public service and dedicated political engagement at the grassroots, municipal, and state levels.

As Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta’s governance philosophy is closely aligned with the collective vision of Team Modi and is driven by a clear mission to make Delhi healthier, better educated, and more equitable. She firmly believes that the city must receive the rights, opportunities, and development it has long been denied. Her approach to leadership is rooted in tireless work, honesty in intent, and focus on tangible outcomes, reflecting her conviction that real development is achieved through consistent action on the ground rather than rhetoric or empty promises.

Rekha Gupta comes from a progressive middle-class family rooted in strong values and public service. She was born on July 19, 1974, in Julana, Jind district of Haryana, to Shri Jai Bhagwan Jindal, a branch manager with the State Bank of India, and Smt. Urmila Jindal, a homemaker. When Rekha Gupta was just two years old, her family moved to Delhi, settling in Pitampura, where she grew up observing firsthand the aspirations and challenges of urban middle-class families. This early exposure to Delhi’s social fabric played a formative role in shaping her sensitivity toward public issues and citizen welfare.

She has a strong academic foundation that reflects her belief that education is not an end in itself but the starting point of lifelong learning and growth. She earned her Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) degree from Daulat Ram College, University of Delhi, followed by an LLB from Chaudhary Charan Singh University. This combination of financial and legal education equipped her with analytical clarity and institutional understanding that later proved invaluable in governance, policy formulation, and public administration.

In 1998, Rekha Gupta married Shri Manish Gupta, an industrialist engaged in the brass parts sector. As a mother of two, she has experienced the responsibilities and joys of family life alongside the demands of public service. Balancing her roles at home and in public life, she has consistently drawn strength from her family while remaining deeply committed to serving society.

From Student Life to Public Leadership: An Inspiring Journey

Her journey into public service began early through student activism. In 1992, during her college years, Rekha Gupta joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), marking her formal entry into public life.

Her leadership abilities quickly came to the fore. She was elected General Secretary of the Daulat Ram College Students’ Union in 1994, followed by her election as General Secretary of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) in 1995. In 1996–97, she was elected President of DUSU, emerging as one of the most prominent student leaders of her time.

These formative years established her as a leader deeply connected with the aspirations of youth and grounded in grassroots engagement.

Rekha Gupta’s organisational journey within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) reflects steady growth built on dedication and performance. She began her work in the party’s youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), serving as Pradesh Mantri of BJYM Delhi in 2002.

Recognising her leadership potential, the party appointed her National Secretary of BJYM from 2004 to 2006. Over the years, she earned a reputation as a disciplined organiser, a consensus-builder, and a leader trusted across party structures.

Rekha Gupta entered formal electoral politics in 2007, when she was elected as Municipal Councillor from North Pitampura (Ward No. 54) in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi elections. She was re-elected in 2012 and again in 2022, serving three consecutive terms as a councillor.

As the elected representative of Pitampura and Shalimar Bagh, she played a key role in resolving long-pending civic issues, improving urban infrastructure, and strengthening basic public services. Her tenure was marked by a results-driven approach, accessibility to citizens, and transparent governance.

During her time in municipal governance, Rekha Gupta served as Chairperson of the Women’s Welfare and Child Development Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. In this role, she championed comprehensive welfare initiatives aimed at empowering women and safeguarding children.

Her leadership style emphasised people-centric solutions, accountability, and systematic development of civic infrastructure.

One of her most impactful initiatives was the Sumedha Yojana, a transformative program providing financial assistance to economically disadvantaged girls to pursue higher education. The initiative reflects her deep commitment to inclusive growth and her belief that empowering girls is key to building a stronger society.

In recognition of her growing stature and consistent work for women’s empowerment, Rekha Gupta was appointed Vice President of BJP Delhi Mahila Morcha, and later elevated to National Vice President of BJP Mahila Morcha. These roles underscored her rising prominence as a leader advocating women’s participation in politics and governance.

Her perseverance and people-first leadership culminated in a decisive victory in the 2025 Delhi Vidhan Sabha elections, where she won the Shalimar Bagh seat with a margin of over 29,000 votes. This commanding mandate reflected the trust placed in her by the people and acknowledged her years of dedicated grassroots work.

From 2004 till 2006, Rekha Gupta served as the National Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha. Her contributions to organizational expansion, management of training camps, and development of nationalist leadership were significant. Municipal Councillor, North Pitampura (Ward No. 54) – 2007

In 2007, Rekha Gupta was elected as the Municipal Councillor from North Pitampura (Ward No. 54). In 2012, Rekha Gupta was appointed Chairperson of the Education Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. In 2013, Rekha Gupta was entrusted with the role of Minister in the BJP National Mahila Morcha. In 2021, Rekha Gupta was appointed National Vice-President of the BJP Mahila Morcha. Simultaneously, she was entrusted with the key responsibility of being in-charge of the UP Mahila Morcha. In this role, she effectively conducted training programs for women workers, public outreach campaigns, and empowerment-related programs to strengthen the organization at the state level.
